How to use this tool

  1. Enter salary, the percent you defer, and the plan match formula.
  2. Set age so catch-up caps apply.
  3. Read employee, employer, and leftover IRS room.

Worked example

$100,000 salary, 6% deferral, 50% match on the first 6%, age 40: you put in $6,000, the employer puts in $3,000, and $18,500 of the $24,500 employee cap remains. Age 50+ leftover can go to the catch-up vs card page; health dollars are on the 2026 HSA calculator. A pre-tax IRA conversion that should stay inside one ordinary bracket is on Roth conversion bracket-fill; a 2026 health FSA election is on the FSA calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2026 limits?
Elective deferral $24,500. Catch-up $8,000 if age 50+. Super catch-up $11,250 if you turn 60–63. Combined employee+employer $72,000 plus catch-up (IRS IR-2025-111).
What does 50% of the first 6% mean?
On a $100,000 salary, 6% is $6,000 from you and $3,000 from the employer. Deferring 10% still only matches the first 6% unless your plan says otherwise.
