Free Character Counter — Spaces, UTF-8, Platform Limits
Free character counter. Characters with and without spaces, UTF-8 bytes, and remaining room for X, Instagram, SMS, and meta tags. Browser tool — nothing is uploaded.
Characters are Unicode code points (café is 4). Spaces are optional. UTF-8 bytes are for APIs. Limits are platform defaults, not a live API.

Frequently asked questions
- With spaces and without?
- Both. “Hi there” is 8 characters and 7 without spaces. Code points, not UTF-16 surrogates.
- Twitter / X 280?
- The table uses 280 code points. X still wraps some URLs as 23-character t.co links — this page does not fetch URLs.
- SMS 160?
- One GSM-7 segment is 160 characters. Unicode SMS is 70 per segment. This row is the 160 default.
- Meta description / title tag?
- 160 and 60 are common pixel-safe targets. Google does not publish a hard character cap.
