How to use this tool
- Pick filing status and enter MAGI.
- Count qualifying children under 17 and other dependents.
- Enter tax before this credit and earned income for ACTC.
- Read nonrefundable CTC/ODC and any ACTC refund.
Worked example
Married filing jointly, two children, $120,000 MAGI and $8,000 of tax: the full $4,400 is nonrefundable. Same two children, $40,000 MAGI and $1,000 of tax: $1,000 offsets tax and $3,400 can come back as ACTC (under the $1,700-per-child and 15%-of-earned-over-$2,500 caps). A single filer at $210,000 MAGI loses $500 to phase-out. Daycare itself is the Child and Dependent Care Credit, not this $2,200 CTC.
Frequently asked questions
- How much is the 2026 Child Tax Credit?
- $2,200 per qualifying child under 17. Up to $1,700 of that can come back as the Additional Child Tax Credit if tax is too low to use the full credit.
- When does the credit phase out?
- $200,000 MAGI (single / HOH / MFS) or $400,000 (married filing jointly). It drops $50 for every $1,000 or part of $1,000 over the line.
- What about other dependents?
- The $500 Credit for Other Dependents is nonrefundable and uses the same MAGI phase-out. It is not ACTC.
- Is this Schedule 8812?
- No. It skips SSN tests, residency, and the alternative Social Security formula. Confirm with the IRS instructions.
