- Set lastmod / changefreq / priority or leave them blank.
- Download sitemap.xml and host it at /sitemap.xml.
Pair with robots.txt
A sitemap nobody references is easy to miss. Add Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml in the robots generator after you host the file. To restamp lastmod on an existing urlset, use the sitemap lastmod helper.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this a sitemap index?
- No. It emits a urlset. Split files yourself if you exceed 50,000 URLs.
- Do lastmod and priority matter?
- lastmod can help recrawl. priority is mostly ignored. changefreq is a hint.
- Should URLs be absolute?
- Yes. Relative paths are written as-is; crawlers want https://…
- How do I tell Google?
- Link the file from robots.txt (use the robots generator) and submit in Search Console.
- Is the URL list uploaded?
- No.
