Worked example

<p>Hello &amp; welcome.</p> becomes “Hello & welcome.” Encode the other direction with the HTML entity encoder.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an HTML sanitizer?
No. Output is plain text. Do not feed it back into innerHTML and expect it to be safe markup.
What happens to script and style?
The tags and their bodies are dropped. Comments are dropped. Block tags become newlines.
Entities?
Optional decode of &amp; &lt; and numeric entities. Out-of-range &#…; codes stay as text instead of throwing.
