Income Tax Dept ITR help: self-occupied purchase/construction (loan on or after 1 Apr 1999, completed in five years) is capped at ₹2,00,000. How to use this tool
- Pick old vs new regime, self-occupied vs let-out, and loan purpose.
- Enter interest paid this year and any leftover pre-construction interest.
- Read allowable 24(b), the cap, and the amount that does not deduct.
Worked example
Old regime, self-occupied, ₹2.8 lakh interest: allowable 24(b) is ₹2,00,000 and ₹80,000 is leftover. The same loan on the new regime is ₹0. Let-out ₹2.8 lakh is fully allowed against rent; only the ₹2 lakh set-off cap matters if the house shows a loss. Regime choice lives on the old vs new tax regime calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Section 24(b) cap?
- Income Tax Dept ITR help: self-occupied purchase/construction (loan on or after 1 Apr 1999, completed within five years) is ₹2,00,000. Repairs, older loans, or delayed construction drop to ₹30,000. Let-out interest has no cap; loss set-off against other heads is still ₹2,00,000.
- Does the new regime allow 24(b)?
- Not for a self-occupied house. Let-out interest can still reduce rental income. Compare regimes on the old vs new page — this page only sizes the interest deduction.
- Pre-construction interest?
- Allowed in five equal instalments from the year of completion, inside the same ₹2 lakh / ₹30,000 cap. Enter the unamortised pool; this page takes one-fifth.
- Is this 80EEA or 80C principal?
- No. 80EEA is skipped here. Principal repayment sits in 80C, not 24(b).
